A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. Psychiatrists can prescribe medications, order medical tests when appropriate, and provide psychotherapy. Our psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNP) have advanced nursing training and similar prescribing abilities. A therapist (such as a LICSW or psychologist) provides psychotherapy but does not prescribe medication. Therapy focuses on developing coping skills, improving insight, and working through emotional or behavioral challenges. At Boston Psychiatry Center, we provide comprehensive psychiatric care, including medication management and psychotherapy, and we collaborate closely when multiple services are appropriate.

Not necessarily. We take a collaborative approach and work on a treatment approach that respects your autonomy. Some patients benefit from therapy alone, others from medication alone, and many benefit from a combination. We'll discuss all options during your evaluation.

Your first visit is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. This appointment typically lasts longer than follow-up visits and is focused on understanding you as a whole person. We will review: Your current concerns and symptoms Psychiatric and medical history Prior treatments and medications Family history Social, academic, or occupational context We use a structured, measurement-based approach when appropriate, which may include brief questionnaires to better understand symptom severity and track progress over time. At the end of the visit, we will discuss diagnostic impressions (if applicable), treatment recommendations, and next steps. This may include medication, psychotherapy, lifestyle interventions, or another appointment for further evaluation. Our goal is to create a clear, collaborative treatment plan tailored to you.

Yes! We offer both in-person appointments at our Belmont office and secure telehealth video appointments for Massachusetts residents. Telehealth provides the same quality care with added convenience.
